# Troubleshooting

> Common issues and fixes for the browser extension.

## Extension Can't Connect to Native Host

1. Verify the Extension ID in `com.notepad.launcher.json` matches your actual ID exactly.
2. Check the `path` in the manifest points to the correct file location.
3. Ensure Python is in your PATH: `python --version`
4. Confirm the registry was properly updated (Windows).
5. **Restart Edge/Chrome** after making any changes.

## Python Not Found

* Install Python from [python.org](https://www.python.org)
* On Windows, use `native_host.bat` instead of `native_host.py` in the manifest, and update the batch file to use the full path to `python.exe`

## Permission Denied (Linux / macOS)

```bash theme={null}
chmod +x native_host.py
```

## Registry Changes Don't Take Effect (Windows)

1. Fully close Edge (check Task Manager — kill all `msedge.exe` processes)
2. Double-click the `.reg` file again
3. Restart Edge

## Debugging

**Native host:**

1. Uncomment the logging code in `native_host.py`
2. Check the log file for errors
3. Test the script manually from the command line

**Extension:**

1. Open `edge://extensions/`
2. Click **Inspect views: service worker** under your extension
3. Check the console for error messages
